What I’m Watching for Pride

The following is a list of what I’m watching for Pride. Some of these, like The Boys in the Band (1970), are movies I watch every year for Pride, while others are new additions to the list. What are you watching for Pride? Let me know in the comments below.

Tales of the City (1993)

Tales of the City is a 1993 television series produced by Channel 4 in the UK, then broadcast on PBS in the United States in January 1994. It’s based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Armistead Maupin. When Tales of the City first aired on PBS it was considered risqué due to its subject matter and nudity.

An Early Frost

An Early Frost is a 1985 made for television drama about AIDS. It received 14 Emmy nominations, including Best Original Teleplay, a Peabody Award, and multiple Golden Globe nominations. When it aired on November 11, 1985, it reached 34 million households, making it the highest rated show of the night.

The Boys in the Band (1970)

The Boys in the Band directed by William Friedkin is a must-see for anybody interested in gay cinema. It’s not an easy film to watch, but it’s an honest depiction of the emotional damage caused from living in the closet.

You can read my review of The Boys in the Band here.

Pride

Pride is a historical drama about gay and lesbian activists raising money to help families effected by the British miners’ strike of 1984. The film stays close to the facts and leaves its audience smiling.

Ru Paul’s All Stars (season 8)

Drag Queens from previous seasons of Ru Pauls’ Drag Race compete for the crown.

Queen of the Universe (seasons 1)

Queen of the Universe is a singing competition where fourteen drag queens compete for the title of Queen of the Universe. Although I’m aware that there are drag queens who can sing, I had no idea how many were out there. Queen of the Universe is pure entertainment.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Dessert

In The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, three drag queens set out on a road trip through the dessert to perform a four week gig at a casino. It stars Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, and Guy Pearce.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is outrageous fun that should not be missed.

Milk

Milk is biographical film about the life of gay activist Harvey Milk. It stars Sean Penn as Harvey Milk and Josh Brolin as Dan white, the man who shot and killed him.
