Movie Review: The Big Gay Musical

The Big Gay Musical movie

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.

The Big Gay Musical is about two lead actors in the Off-Broadway gay musical, Adam and Steve: Just the Way God Made ‘Em. The film has two stories, one on stage and the other off. Sadly, neither is very interesting.

The film is about the two leads, Paul (Daniel Robinson) and Eddie (Joey Dudding). Paul thinks he’s in a loving relationship until his boyfriend suddenly ghosts him after hearing a rumor that Paul had AIDS. Paul gets tested to prove that the rumor is false, but his now ex-boyfriend still won’t return his calls. Distraught and hurt, Paul starts dating again, but finds that men only want sex, so he decides he’s going to do the same.

Eddie is a virgin who is not out to his deeply religious parents. The cast discovers that he’s never had sex and takes him out, where Eddie gets drunk and goes home with a stranger. The guy convinces Eddie to have unprotected sex. Since Eddie thinks they’re going to be boyfriends, he goes along.

While all this is going on, we get snippets of the musical, which has some snappy numbers and dance routines. The play is about how God made Adam and Eve, then had to banish them when Eve ate the apple. He then creates Adam and Steve and puts them in charge of Eden. Jealous that Adam and Steve get to rule Eden, Eve writes The Bible and uses it to get people to hate homosexuals.

Both stories come off as undeveloped outlines, but the tunes by Rick Crom are entertaining and save the day. The cast is full of openly gay Broadway actors, so they can sing and are lip-synching to their actual voices. It’s a shame they took part in this half-baked film.

The Big Gay Musical isn’t completely awful, the background cast has some amusing moments. The musical numbers are also enjoyable. The story was written by Fred M Caruso, and if he had given the story a bit more thought, this could have been campy fun. Instead, it’s just a bit tiresome.
