Series Review: Heartstopper Season 2

Kit Connor and Joe Locke in Heartstopper Season 2

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Heartstopper Season 2 sees Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) spending too much time together and not concentrating on school; Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmine Finney) realizing their feelings for each other are deeper than friendship; Tara (Corrine Brown) questioning her relationship with Darcy (Kizzy Edgell); and Isaac (Tobie Donovan) exploring his identity.

Season two of Heartstopper also includes the parents, which adds a bit of depth to the story. Olivia Coleman returns as Nick’s mother and we get to meet Nick’s father (Thibault de Montalembert) and brother, David (Jack Barton). Seeing Nick react to and interact with his estranged father and brother adds a new dimension to Nick. We can see how his father’s acceptance plays a major part in the difficulties he has with coming out. And although Charlies wants Nick to come out on his own terms, it reminds him of his relationship with Ben. Add that to the stress of both of them not doing well in school, and their relationship takes on a new dynamic.

Darcy’s relationship with her mother (Rachael Stirling) also plays a part in season two. This story shows why Darcy is overconfident and secretive with her emotions. It brings some tension between her and Tara, who is looking to hear Darcy say that she loves her. Tara is also wondering why she’s never met Darcy’s family.

Season two introduces a new storyline, that of the awkwardly stern Youssef Farouk (Nima Taleghani ), and the loveable Nathan Ajayi (Fisayo Akinade). Both Yussef and Nathan chaperone the school trip to Paris, room together and have some very awkward moments.

If you enjoyed Season one of Heartstopper, you can’t miss season two. The acting, script, direction, etc… are just as good as season one.

You can watch Heartstopper on Netflix.
