5 Movies That Were Far Better than I Expected

We all have a movie or two that’s been on our watch list longer than a month just waiting to be viewed. It looked interesting enough to put ad the list but gets passed by every time you’re looking for something to watch. And when you finally get to watching it, you wish you had watched it sooner. Well, two of the moves on this list fall into that category (Naz & Maalik and Free Fall). The other movies are films that I thought would be awful or just mediocre and ended up packing a delightful punch.

The movies are listed in the order in which I watched them, from most recent to least. They vary in genre, so there’s probably something here for everybody. And so here are five movies that were far better than I expected.

Naz & Maalik

Curtiss Cook Jr. and Kerwin Johnson Jr. in Naz & Maalik

Naz & Maalik sat on my watch list on Amazon Prime for months before I decided it was time to watch it. I had heard great things about the film, but the preview did it no justice. And when I finally watched it, I was shocked at how good it is. Everything about the movie is done so well, that it sucked me in. I should have never watched the trailer.

The Cult

The Cult (2015) a film by André Antônio

The trailer for The Cult makes it look so low budget that I had to watch it. My expectations were low, like sub-basement low. I sat down prepared for something awful, only to get a brilliantly crafted low budget gem of a film. I watched it once alone, then again with my husband a few days later.

The Cult is worthy of a second viewing just to catch aspects you may have missed the first time. It’s also something you’ll want to talk about after seeing it, so I suggest watching it with friends.

If you like low budget art-house gems, do not miss The Cult.

Stage Mother

Stage Mother starring Jackie Weaver, Lucy Liu, and Adrian Grenier

Don’t get me wrong, Stage Mother is not a good movie, but it is highly entertaining. What makes Stage Mother good is Jacki Weaver. Watching her traipse through San Francisco befriending drag queens and transgender women is so entertaining. Who knew?

If given the opportunity, I would watch Stage Mother again. It’s so bad that it’s good.

Free Fall

Free Fall (2013)

Free Fall sat on several of my watch lists before I finally broke down and gave it a go. For some reason I had low expectations for it and was shocked by how much I loved it. In fact, I liked it so much that I recently re-watched it. If you have Free Fall sitting on a watch list somewhere, make time for it. It is so well done.

Papi Chulo

Papi Chulo starring Matt Bomer and Alejandro Patiño

My expectations for Papi Chulo were low. The preview made it look like it would be mediocre, but it has a surprise twist that comes at just the right moment. And when the twist arrived, the hubby and I jumped out of our seats and screamed. Neither of us saw it coming. It was a pleasant surprise that elevated the movie to fantastic. Papi Chulo is so damn good!
