5 Must-See Lesbian Movies

Looking for a good lesbian movie? You’ve come to the right place. Below are five of my favorite lesbian movies in no special order. Take a look, you’re bound to find something to watch.

Pariah

Adepero Oduye in Pariah

Pariah is a coming-of-age story with all the heartache, confusion and fear that comes with it. The film is beautifully told, playing out slowly and trusting the viewer to put the pieces together. It’s a subtle story with great acting.

I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing

Sheila McCarthy in I've Heard the Mermaids Singing

Sheila McCarthy is perfect as Polly Vandersma, a young woman prone to daydreaming who wanders through life, taking it all in. Patricia Rozema’s directing and script, the cinematography, pacing, and McCarthy’s acting are so perfect that this movie can do no wrong. Take some time to see I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing and prepare to be enchanted.

Tár

Cate Blanchette as Lydia Tár

Cate Blanchette gives a riveting performance as Lydia Tár, a woman who rose to fame in the male dominated world of the philharmonic orchestra to become a world-renown conductor.

With Tár, Todd Field gives us a film that succeeds on every level. It’s subtle, well shot and edited, has some great performances, and a thoughtful script that understands how people interact. Every aspect of this movie works so well that I never felt it’s length, which is two hours and thirty-eight minutes. It is a film that should not be missed.

Carol

Carol starring Cate Blanchette and Rooney Mara

Carol is a lesbian romance set in the 1950s and is based on the Patricia Highsmith novel, The Price of Salt. It’s directed by Todd Haynes and stars Cate Blanchette as Carol Aird, and Rooney Mara as Therese Belivet.

Carol is a superb film that’s full of beauty, thought, honesty, and some of the best acting you’re going to see. It’s a quiet movie, so it may not be for everybody. If you enjoy a thoughtful piece of cinema, give Carol a watch. You will not be disappointed.

Bound

Bound (1997)

Bound is a highly stylized and intense lesbian neo-noir crime thriller. Gina Gershon plays Corky, an ex-con fresh out of the slammer after serving five years for what she calls “the readjustment of wealth.” Things get out of control when she begins to flirt with a mobster’s girlfriend, Violet (Meg Tilly).

Bound is a fun and sexy thriller with style and panache. If you’re a fan of film noir or tense thrillers, this is for you.
