The Story:

The Boy Foretold by the Stars is a Filipino romantic comedy about two openly gay high school student at St Francis Catholic School, Dominic (Adrian Lindayag) and Timmy (John Leinard Ramos), who go to a fortune teller, Baby R (Iyah Mina), to find out about their love lives. Baby R tells Dominic that he will meet his soulmate in a week and gives him three signs so he will know who it is.

Every year both Dominic and Timmy participate in the school retreat, Journey of the Lord. When high school basketball star Luke Armada’s (Keann Johnson) girlfriend, Karen (Rissey Reyes), breaks up with him, he signs up for the retreat. As it turns out, Dominic is assigned to be Luke’s sponsor.

Although Dominic is not out to his parents, he lets Luke know that he’s gay and asks if it will a problem, to which Luke says it won’t. As Luke and Dominic begin to open up to each other and become friends, Dominic thinks nothing of it. After all Luke is straight. And then Dominic starts to notice the signs Baby R foretold…

Some Thoughts:

The Boy Foretold by the Stars takes place in a Catholic school that doesn’t demonize LGBT people, which is a welcome surprise. Despite that, there are still some students who are homophobic.

If you like comedy with a lot of outrageous situations and over the top characters, this movie is for you. The outrageousness is even out by Dominic and Luke, who are fairly down to earth, and their stories are heartfelt. Lindayag and Ramos give depth and feeling to their characters, making it easy to get wrapped up in their situation.

Although Timmy goes to see the fortune teller with Dominic and gets a reading, his story is pushed to the side and forgotten. I would have liked to see more of what happens to him.

There are some touching scenes between Dominic and Luke. The movie also has enough emotional ups and downs to satisfy any romance lover. The pacing is also good, so there’s never a dull moment.

The Final Verdict:

The Boy Foretold by the Stars is a delightful romantic comedy with good acting, and an interesting premise. the story will draw you in and leave you smiling.
