Jump to the good stuff: The Story | Some Thoughts | The Final Verdict
The Story:
The Man with the Answers is a gay European buddy/road trip movie.
After the death of his grandmother, Victoras (Vasilis Magouliotis) takes a road trip from his home in Greece to Germany to visit his mother. On the way, he encounters Mathias (Anton Weil), a carefree man, and gives him a ride.
While Victoras wants to take the fastest rout to Germany, Mathias convinces him the backroads will be longer, but much more enjoyable. And as they drive, they play twenty questions and get to know each other.
Some Thoughts:
The Man with the Answers is a beautiful film set mostly in the Italian countryside. And unlike most gay films, this one isn’t centered around either of the characters’ sexuality. Instead, it deals with Victoras struggling with his personal demons, which he wants to keep to himself, while Mathias tries to get to know him.
The story is character driven, so the film would be a difficult to watch if it wasn’t for the chemistry between Magouliotis and Weil. Both actors play off each other incredibly well which, combined with the gorgeous cinematography and European countryside, make for a delightful viewing experience.
Although there is romance, it’s not pivotal to the plot. And when the romance does happen, it’s sweet and innocent. This isn’t the type of movie that comes around often, which makes it feel a bit special. It also helps that it’s very well done.
Director Stelios Kammitsis knows how to tell a simple story and draw the viewer in.
The Final Verdict:
The Man with the Answers is a beautiful film that’s perfect for an afternoon viewing. You will be glad you went along for the ride.
