The Story:
The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo is a YouTube web series written and directed by Brian Jordan Alvarez. It’s an absurdist comedy about a group of twenty-something friends living in Los Angeles.
The series is about Caleb (Brian Jordan Alvarez), whose boyfriend, Benicio (Antonio Marziale), is an actor living in England. Although Caleb has agreed to have a monogamous relationship with Benicio, he has a wandering eye and lusts over his straight friend, Billy (Jon Ebeling); and Billy wants to have sex with Caleb’s gal pal, Karen (Stephanie Koenig). There’s also the outrageous Freckle (Jason Greene), who lusts over everyone, and Lenjamin (Ken Kirby), whose identity shifts with the wind.
Going into the story any further would do it no justice, you have to see it for yourself.
Some Thoughts:
The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo is an outrageous comic series that starts slow and builds up to a peek of frenetic energy. Each episode is short (the longest is 22:17), but the writing is tight and makes every second count. Also, the production quality is good despite being a web series from 2016.
This is the type of show you watch for the characters and over the top humor. It works because the acting is good, and the entire cast understands comedy and pacing. And while the situations aren’t new to any sitcom, they’re delivered in a way that’s so outlandish that they feel fresh. Pair that with fresh, snappy dialog, and you’ve got a hit.
Although the series is about a sexually diverse group that identifies across the spectrum of straight to non-binary, the humor doesn’t hinge on it. Nobody looks twice if a self-identified male wears a dress, its’ just part of life. These are simply people whose lives revolve around one another, and that is where the comedy comes from.
The Final Verdict:
The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo is an outrageous comedy that should not be missed. It shows a modern slice of life that’s not often depicted on TV or in movies. I loved it!
