Jump to the good stuff: The Story | Some Thoughts | The Final Verdict
The Story:
Cthulhu is a gay horror movie based on The Shadow over Innsmouth by HP Lovecraft.
After the death of his mother, Russ (Jason Cottle) is called home by his sister to become the executor of their mother’s estate. Once home, he reconnects with his estranged father, who is the leader of a new age cult. Russ wanders the town visiting places he remembers as a child and gets reacquainted with his childhood friend, Mike (Scott Green), who he has feelings for.
Russ has a strange dream where he is given a black stone with cryptic writing engraved on it. When he wakes, he is holding the stone from his dream. He meets up with some friends at a bar and tells them about the dream and the stone, which is overheard by a drunk man sitting next to them. Before Russ leaves, the drunk tells him that the stone is an instrument for sacrifice.
Strange occurrences and ominous warnings continue as Russ stays in town, culminating in the dramatic conclusion.
Some Thoughts:
Although Cthulhu has its heart in the right place, the film is a mess. Production values are nonexistent, the acting is horrendous, the cinematography, abysmal, and the script is all over the place. However, the story is strange enough to keep your interest.
The plot is as bizarre as any HP Lovecraft yarn and is the only thing that kept me from turning it off. It’s also reminiscent of the horror movies that aired on TV for the Creature Double Feature in the 1970s. Because of that, Cthulhu is a bit of a pleasant throwback for an older generation.
The Final Verdict:
If you enjoy a movie that’s so bad that you can’t stop watching, Cthulhu is a safe bet.
