The Story:

Body Electric is a drama about a 23-year-old man who doesn’t know what he wants from life.

Elias (Kelner Macêdo) works at a clothing factory where he is the assistant to the chief designer, Diana (Dani Nefussi). Diana respects the work Elias does and often suggests ways in which he can further his career. Despite her encouragement, Elias would rather hang out with is co-workers than improve his work life. What follows is an intimate film about the choices he makes.

Some Thoughts:

Body Electric is a slice of life story about a man who refuses to become an adult, so there isn’t a story outside of the theme. It’s beautifully shot and has a talented group of actors. However, if an artsy drama isn’t your thing, then this movie is not for you.

The topic of not wanting to grow up is one many people can relate to, either from their own experiences or seeing it in others. And while the film does a good job showing this, it’s not actually clear why Elias refuses to face reality. There may not be a concrete answer for this, but it would be nice if it delved into it more because there are supportive people around him whose assistance he refuses to accept.

The film is non-judgmental and sex positive. It also flows well and has likeable characters, all of which makes for an enjoyable viewing experience. And because the acting is so good, there’s nothing to draw you out of the action or make you question its authenticity.

Despite the film being well done overall, it’s lack of depth into Elias’s motivations makes it feel at a bit pointless. Watching someone ruin his life, no matter how artfully depicted, can be a bit frustrating.

The Final Verdict:

Body Electric is a beautiful, sex positive slice of life drama. More depth into the main character’s motivations would make this a must-see, but it is worth a look if you enjoy arthouse cinema.
