The Story:
Lesbian Space Princess is an animated adult film about a princess who must rescue her ex-girlfriend after she is taken hostage.
Saira (Shabana Azeez) is the princess of Clitopolis. Her parents have always neglected her, so she has become anxious, introverted, and unsure of herself. Over the years these traits have kept Saira from finding a girlfriend and summoning the power of her labrys. When the adventurous Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel) takes an interest in her, Saira doesn’t know what to do. She becomes overbearing, and after two weeks, Kiki breaks up with her.
After they breakup, Kiki is abducted by a group of Straight White Maliens, who need Saira’s labrys to power their chick magnet. To get help summoning her labrys, Saira must leave the comfort of her home and find Blade (Kween Kong), a drag queen who lives in another galaxy. Swallowing her fear, Saira departs on a journey to save her ex-girfriend.
Some Thoughts:
Lesbian Space Princess would be an interesting movie is it wasn’t so unimaginative. Saira is from Clitopolis, the bad guys are called Straight White Maliens, etc… On top of that, instead of events occurring because of an action, they happen simply to advance the plot. And because Saira is passive during the adventures leading up to meeting Blade, her final realization about herself seems uneventful. If she had to make some effort to get through the early challenges, this would feel more deserving. However, that’s not the case.
To make things worse, all the characters are one dimensional. Saira is nervous, Willow is in love with Saira, Kiki only cares about herself, etc… If this was an animated film for children, I would be okay with that, but it’s clearly made for adults. It would be great if the viewers were given something other than a base story littered with bits of lesbian culture.
The animation is the only thing I enjoyed about this mess. The bright colors and delightful visuals kept me from turning it off.
The Final Verdict:
Lesbian Space Princess is an unimaginative mess that that lacks depth and insight. It would be great for kids if the adult aspects were removed.
