While playing Dead by Daylight, useful information is shown to the player via the HUD (Heads Up Display). For this post, I’m going to concentrate on the Status Effect icons that show up on the right side. These icons indicate a player’s health state and any outside influences affecting their game.
FYI: I mainly play survivor, so this post is geared more towards them.
What Are Status Effects
Status Effects let players know what is currently affecting them. The most common is a heart, which signifies exhaustion. When this comes up, any exhaustion Perk (i.e. Sprint Burst) will not be usable.
Effects with a time duration will have a bold outline indicating the time left before the effect is finished. The image below shows Orela Rose exhausted. She must rest (walk, crouch, stand still) for a specified amount of time before she can use Sprint Burst. She is also under a Hex Totem effect.

Status Effects Keep You Informed
Status Effect icons are there to keep you informed, so give them a glance and keep playing. Refer back to this page if one comes up that you don’t know and after a while they’ll become familiar.

Below are the most common Status Effect with a description of their icons:
- Blessed (Boon Totem): Survivors feel the positive effect of a Boon Totem. The effect depends on the perk another survivor used to bless it. You can find out more from Dead by Daylight, Boon Totems for Beginners.
- Blindness (eye): Players are unable to read any auras.
- Broken (plus sign crossed out): Survivors are unable to be healed past the Injured State
- Cursed (Hex Totem): Survivors feel the negative effect of a Hex Totem. The effect depends on the perk the killer used to bless it.
- Endurance (a torso): Survivors are able to resist damage from the killer. If they’re hit, they will be outlined in white.
- Exhausted (heart): Survivors are unable to use any Exhaustion Perks until the timer runs out on this status effect.
- Exposed (skull): When hit, Survivors will be put into the dying state.
- Haste (foot with wings): Players have their movement speed increased by the percentage indicated.
- Hemorrhage (drop of blood): Survivors bleed more, making them easier to be found by the Killer.
- Hindered (ball and chain): Players move slower.
- Incapacitated (hands with handcuffs): Survivors unable to interact with props or other survivors.
- Madness (brain): Survivors will have various hallucinations and other impairments.
- Mangled (broken bone): Survivors take 25 % longer to be healed for one health state
- Oblivious (person with their eyes covered): Survivors are unable to detect the killer’s terror radius. Music will still be heard when in a chase.
