Dead by Daylight, Becoming a Better Player for Beginners I

Dead by Daylight Tomes Felix Richter

You can watch as many Dead by Daylight videos on looping and flashlight saves as you want, but none of that is worth anything if you haven’t become comfortable with basic game play. I’m talking about moving around the map, pointing the camera, knowing where the killer is, etc… And one of the best ways to do that is to explore the Tomes. Once you’ve been through at least one Tome, then you’ll have enough experience to know which area you need to improve. And that is when those videos will help you the most.

UPDATE: Dead by Daylight has recently undergone an update. The Tomes can now be accessed by clicking on the Tome icon at the bottom left of the screen. It’s to the left of the two people (friends). This page will be updated when I find time.

Playing the Tomes

The Tomes are a set of challenges you can work through as either the killer or a survivor. This will force you to think about the game differently and do things that you may not be comfortable doing. The Tome icon (see below) is in the middle, right side of the main survivor or killer screen.

Hover over the Tome icon and an information card will slide out displaying your current Tome stats. Since I’m only going to talk about the challenges, you can ignore the top two portions, which display your current tier and how many Rift Fragments you have. While they have benefits, they won’t help you improve your game. The third portion down is your current challenge. If no challenge is chosen, it will be empty. Don’t worry, we’ll get that filled in for you next.

At the bottom of the tile it says, SELECT CHALLENGE. Click on that to go to the Tome.

The Challenges

Once in the Tome, you’ll see a map of the challenges. It looks like a series of tiles connected by lines. You begin at the start icon (it looks similar to the Tome icon) and work your way in. The skull tiles are challenges for killers and the round ones are for survivors. There are some tiles with both, which means the challenge is for the killer and survivor.

Dead by Daylight Tome path

The Tome you’re on will be listed at the top, under the CURRENT TOME tab. If there’s a special event Tome (i.e. Blood Moon), it will have its own tab at the top. Special event Tomes operate the same as the current Tome and the two can be played at the same time.

To select a challenge, find the first one closest to the start and click on it. It will shimmer. At the top of the screen the type of challenge it is will be lit up (survivor on the left and killer on the right). If it’s a challenge for the killer and the survivor, then both will be lit up. Click on the challenge button to select it and you’re done.

To know what is expected from you to complete the challenge, hover over it and a card will display and give you an explanation. As you play the game, a tile will slide out from the right as you work on the challenge and show you how far along you are. When it’s complete, the Tome icon on the main screen will glow yellow. When you return to the Tome, the challenge icon will also glow. Click on it and you’re ready to select the next challenge. You must select a challenge connected to the current tile; you can’t jump around.

Character Specific Challenges and Memory Shards

If the tile has a face, you’ll have to play as a specific character to fulfill the challenge. If you don’t want to purchase Auric Cells to buy the character, you can use Iridescent Shards, which are earned during game play.

A tile with an upside-down triangle is a Memory Shard. These challenges will have you interact with a glyph after you do something (i.e. complete a generator, unhook yourself, etc…). Collected memory Shards are kept in the book tab on the left. This is where you can discover more about the game’s backstory.

There are four types of Memory Shards.

  • Shattered Recollection: Synchronizing these with an Archive Portal grants a Haste Status Effect.
  • Terrifying Anamnesis: Collecting the last Memory Shard inflicts the Blindness Status Effect for a specific amount of time. Synchronizing these Memory Shards with an Archive Portal removes the Blindness Status Effect.
  • Stray Thoughts: These are obtained by hooking Survivors for the first time, which produces a Memory Shard from their scream of pain, which must then be collected.
  • Disturbing Notions: These show up after completing Generators, which produce one or multiple Memory Shards nearby, which must then be collected.

The Compendium and The Rift

The Tome is updated periodically (usually with each new release). Previous Tomes are listed under the COMPENDIUM tab. Special event Tomes are not listed; they can only be played during the event. You can go the Compendium if you want to explore them.

The Rift is where you earn items and Blood Points while playing Tome Challenges.
