The Story:
300 Letters (300 Cartas) is a romantic drama about a man who comes home expecting his boyfriend to be there waiting for him. Instead, he finds a box of letters explaining why he isn’t there.
After having been with Tom (Gastón Frías) for 300 days, Jero (Cristian Mariani) goes home to find a pink box with 299 letters inside and one leaning against it. Thinking it’s something romantic, he sits on the sofa and reads the first one, which explains that the box contains one letter for every day they were together and will explain why he’s leaving him. Distraught, Jero opens the box and begins reading. And with the first letter, the story of how they met to the moment he finds the box unfolds.
Some Thoughts:
300 Letters is a simple story about a doomed romance. There’s nothing special about it, but it’s done well enough that it’s hard to find anything to gripe about. It’s sexy, fun, and not too over the top. The movie has a wide variety of characters and hits on many aspects of modern gay life without being preachy. After all, its only purpose is to tell a story, not get into anything too heady. It’s also engaging enough to hold your interest.
Sadly, there’s not much more you can say about this film. The pacing works, the acting is good, and its nicely shot.
The Final Verdict:
300 Letters is a simple drama about the end of a relationship. Although it’s not going to win any awards, it’s not a bad way to spend one and half hours.
