If you’re playing Dead by Daylight on a PC and are having issues with skill checks, changing some settings in the game and on your computer may help. To fix this issue, there were two changes I had to make.
I’m playing Dead by Daylight on a laptop running Windows 11 with an Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GIG RAM, and an Iris Xe graphic card. My laptop monitor has a 60 Hz refresh rate. While this was great for my original purpose, working in Microsoft Office, it became an issue when I started playing PC games on Steam.
The first thing I discovered is that the monitor on my laptop has a low refresh rate. The refresh rate is how often the image updates on the monitor. The higher the refresh rate, the better your chances of hitting the skill check button in time with the dial.
Fix One: getting a second monitor
I bought a new monitor with a 144 Hz refresh rate. Once the monitor was hooked up to my HDMI port, I right clicked on the desktop and chose Display settings. When the Display Settings came up, I went to Advanced display, scrolled down to Choose refresh rate and set it to the highest setting listed (for me it was 144 Hz).
I then went back into Display settings and checked Make this my main display. I checked this so Dead by Daylight will load on the second monitor. This means the system tray will only display on the second monitor, but it’s not a big deal for me.
While this change greatly improved my skill checks overall, there was still a slight lag. This was because my graphics option in Dead by Daylight was set to high. Remember, my computer is not made for gamers so it can’t handle high quality resolutions in a game. If you’re still having the same problem, follow the instructions for fix two below.
Fix Two: change the graphics setting in Dead by Daylight
Fire up Steam then open Dead by Daylight. In the bottom left, find the options cog and click on it (see image below).

From the menu at the top of the screen, choose OPTIONS > GRAPHICS and switch QUALITY to LOW. Also make sure the monitor resolution matches the monitor you’re using (this is under SCREEN SIZE). I don’t notice any difference in image quality when playing.

Once I made these simple changes, my skill checks improved 100%.
