Jump to the good stuff: The Story | Some Thoughts | The Final Verdict
The Story:
Proud is about Filip (Ignacy Liss), a gay male model who often arrives late and unprepared to photo shoots. He spends his money on motorcycles, drugs, and partying, so he can’t afford his own place. Instead, he lives with his sister, Anka (Sylwia Boroń), and her infant daughter, Tosia (Alicja Lewczuk). And despite his sister giving him a place to live, he refuses to anything to help out.
When Anka dies unexpectedly, Filip must decide between caring for Tosia or having her go to an orphanage. Since Filip and Anka had grown up in one, he refuses to allow Tosia to do the same. Instead, he decides to take on the responsibility of raising her himself. And with this decision comes a massive reality check that turns his life upside down.
Some Thoughts:
Although Proud took a while to get my attention, it kept me glued to the screen once things got rolling. Most if this is because Filip can be a difficult character to get behind. Luckily the acting, direction, and cinematography are all top notch and kept me interested. The payoff for this was so gradual that I hadn’t realized how invested I was until more than halfway through, which is when something emotionally jarring happens.
Although Liss and Sobocińska stand out in their roles, it’s the entire cast that makes the limited series work. Not a single person is miscast, right down to Tosia. The events and how they play out feel real, and it never gets schlocky. While the acting plays a big part in that, so does the script. My only criticism is that I wish it had one or two more episodes to flesh out Filp’s employment and past experiences. Neither of these issues ruin the series, but they would have enhanced it.
There is a sociopolitical aspect to Proud that’s never heavy handed. And while it does discuss LGBT politics in present day Poland, it doesn’t make it the sole focus. Also, the end doesn’t tie everything up that way some people may want.
The Final Verdict:
Proud is an exceptionally well-made drama about being gay in present day Poland. If you need to have everything wrapped up by the end of the story, this may not be for you. However, it’s perfect for anybody looking for something challenging that packs an emotional punch.
